What is HEIC Format?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra. Based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard, HEIC provides 50% smaller file sizes compared to JPEG while maintaining the same visual quality.

HEIC Format

  • 50% smaller files than JPEG at same quality
  • Supports 16-bit color depth (vs JPEG's 8-bit)
  • Can store multiple images in one file
  • Preserves image editing history and depth maps

Why Convert to PDF?

  • Universal compatibility across all devices
  • Combine multiple photos in one document
  • Professional presentation and printing
  • Secure archiving with standard format

Technical FAQ

Why can't Windows open HEIC files natively?
HEIC uses the HEVC (H.265) codec which requires licensing fees. Microsoft only includes HEIC support in Windows 10/11 through an optional extension from the Microsoft Store. Converting to PDF bypasses this limitation entirely.
What's the difference between HEIC and HEIF?
HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) is the container format standard, while HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's specific implementation using the HEVC codec. For practical purposes, they're interchangeable—our converter handles both.
Can I convert Live Photos or Portrait mode photos?
Yes! Live Photos and Portrait mode photos are stored as HEIC files. The converter extracts the main still image for the PDF. Note that the video component of Live Photos and depth map of Portrait mode won't be included in the PDF.
Are iPhone ProRAW photos supported?
ProRAW files (.DNG format) are different from HEIC and are not directly supported. However, if you export ProRAW photos from the Photos app as HEIC, those can be converted. For ProRAW files, consider using our separate image converter tool.
Why does conversion take longer for some photos?
Processing time depends on image resolution (48MP photos from iPhone 14/15 Pro take longer than 12MP), your device's processing power, and browser performance. Modern browsers with WebAssembly support provide the best experience.
